McLaughlin, who holds professorships at UCL, Yale and UCLA and counts Young British Architect of the Year 1998 among the innumerably long list of highly prestigious awards he has won in the course of his career, has guided the practice according to his vision: they don’t specialise in particular building types but, quite simply, modern and ‘high quality architecture’. Their offering is broad, in fact, and they work on everything from town master plans, to schools, health centres, community buildings, group housing, private residential houses, exhibitions, furniture and bandstands; and they recently won the competition to re-imagine the entrance grounds of the Natural History Museum.

At Niall McLaughlin Architects, they consider ‘the inventive use of building materials, the qualities of light and the relationship between the building and its surroundings’ more important than working in a particular style: ‘We hope that each project will be an original interpretation of the client, site, brief and budget.’
