Charles Bonas is somewhat of a pioneer in the sector, having started tutoring and advising UHNW families 25 years ago, to pay for professional law exams. After training as a teacher in public schools and experiencing the American school system, the Oxford-educated tutor then turned the part-time job into a full-time career. He was the one who introduced the college counsellor system, already well-known in US education, to the UK system. ‘Now tuition is everywhere’, he says ‘up to half of privately educated children in London are tutored; back then it was a rarity, with parents placing advertisements to find tutors in The Times. Only a small handful of consultants provided school and university placement advice’. Bonas observes that across the world, professionally delivered tuition and educational consulting has become an essential supplement to mainstream schooling. He says that Bonas MacFarlane’s unique approach, which he likens to that of private bankers and GPs, is what makes the firm stand out. ‘Schools are wonderful, but the function of a school is to encourage children to fit into a community and blend in seamlessly, particularly for children of the global elite… But we come at it from a different angle, where we are looking at the child as an individual within a family environment.’
