New head of Sotheby’s Financial Dorella Madeira follows in the footsteps of Jan Prasens, bringing 17 years of banking experience to the role. She joins with business booming: it has tripled in the last five years as the value of art has gone up, which encouraging people to capitalise on it. SFS differs from traditional lenders, as they have the art expertise in house — with experts on site to actually appraise it. A lender embedded in an auction house brings other benefits too, such as allowing Sotheby’s Financial Services to operate at a speed with which banks can’t compete. In fact it may not be too much of a stretch to assert that art finance has now become the major driver of the auction house’s profitability and business.
