‘This is not a B2B business, this is a human to human business,’ says Lombard Odier’s CEO Duncan MacIntyre. He is speaking about the interpersonal nature of his role with clients, who entrust him not only with their wealth, but their aspirations. Hired from Coutts’ private office to oversee the Swiss private bank’s UK expansion, MacIntyre is proud of the calibre of advisers now available in the industry. The financial sector is ‘reshaping itself away from traditional investment banking models’, he says, adding that: ‘We’re no longer a second cousin —we’re very much sitting at the top table, and that is a very important place for private banking to be’. The evolution is a reflection of the way in which the super-rich think, and how they seek ‘specialisation and depth’ rather than commoditisation. In the private client space, MacIntyre points out the extent of his commitment to the task of wealth management: ‘We’re 100 per cent dedicated to looking after wealth — that makes us quite distinct. We’re not a business where wealth management is a very small subset of a whole.’ MacIntyre also emphasises the bank’s focus on technology as a means to future-proof service: ‘Our proprietary technology system is probably one of the most advanced private client platforms out there. As we go into the environment of MiFID II and all the regulatory changes, we are already fully compliant.’
