Ed Maggs is the managing director of one of the largest and oldest antiquarian bookshops in the world — Maggs Bros Ltd was established in 1853 by Uriah Maggs, his ancestor. He is also head of its modern department, specialising in English literature since 1800. The firm — which holds a Royal Warrant from the Queen — is famous for buying a Caxton Press Canterbury Tales, the first book printed in England, for a record $4.2 million in 1998. More than 100,000 books are available through catalogues and include Irish literature, naval and military books, material on Japanese photography and extremely rare books from the Roxburghe Club (normally up to 300 copies would be printed for private sale and through chosen book dealers).
