Personal recommendations have ‘always been the most effective method’ by which new clients find him. His role is ‘about forging a relationship with an individual by establishing trust’: he now regards many former candidates as good friends. He observes that wealth managers are having to become more efficient in managing clients’ wealth, due to the increased cost of doing business. ‘It has gone up significantly for two reasons — complying with new regulation… and buying in research.’
