Mount Street’s George celebrates numerous different art styles from the traditional club art deco to post-pop. Suitably, the club’s gastronomic focus is equally varied and formidable, combining continental favourites with seasonal British fare. The relaxed surroundings don’t seem to have encouraged the same wanton hedonism seen at George’s Birley-founded sisters. Perhaps because of that, the quieter corridors and ‘nooks and corners’ have created ‘endless opportunities’, not only for social encounters but also for the most poignant of unofficial business meetings. FTSE chiefs are known to meet here, and David Cameron and James Murdoch are alleged to have met here in order to thrash out the Murdoch empire’s realignment with the Tories.
