George Saumarez Smith is one of few architects who still produce hand drawings upon beginning a new project. In 2010, he put together the exhibition Three Classicists alongside Francis Terry and Ben Pentreath exhibiting that skill. His solo exhibition Measure Draw Build was at RIBA in late 2017. References to 18th-century English architecture pervade his work. ‘It’s a time when they seemed to do everything right,’ he explains. However, this is not to say his work lacks contemporary freshness: ‘It’s about trying to create something individual for each client,’ he tells Spear’s. ‘The more you travel, the more you pick up new influences,’ he adds. ‘It’s like food — you bring back new ingredients and try to incorporate them into what you were doing before.’
