Ian Ryan, whose practice centres on instructions from professionals, celebrities, sportspeople and company directors, has had a busy year. Most notably, he represented Keith Vaz in a police investigation arising out of the Sunday Mirror sting, persuading the police to close the investigation. Ryan, who founded Howard Kennedy’s criminal law department, is empathetic about what his clients are going through: ‘[Our] clients’ priorities include trying to avoid prosecution if at all possible, but also reputation management and damage limitation,’ he says. Of late, he has represented two Tesco directors under SFO investigation, and a banker in the Euribor trial. He is a lawyer with a ‘wealth of experience’.
