It’s a case of gamekeeper turned poacher for Jeff Millington, who started his career at HMRC aged 17 and left 24 years later. ‘It helps if you know what the inspector is thinking.’ He says inexperienced inspectors often get lost in the information they try to process. One recent challenge he made was on a client’s lapsed tax assessment: ‘They weren’t too pleased but realised that was the case. The inspector became bogged down and didn’t realise the bigger picture.’ He does credit the compromise achieved by disclosure facilities, as they have raised billions for HMRC and helped his clients. His use of the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility (LDF) recently reduced one client’s tax bill from £10 million to zero.
