‘We’re not just technically good, we’re also emotionally intelligent about the way we do it,’ says
Jonathan Golden, co-founder of specialist employment law firm Golden Leaver. ‘It’s the empathetic end of the legal spectrum. You are treating the person as much as the problem.’ Golden, who studied philosophy at university before
training as a lawyer, advises on all areas of employment law, specialising in negotiating contracts and termination packages for leading individuals. He is sought out by professional practices and private equity houses for his discretion and expertise, and often acts to settle partnership, boardroom and shareholder disputes. Even a CEO can be subject to bullying and sexism, explains Golden, who has been practising employment law for over 30 years now. ‘The pervading attitude in business is that if you’re senior enough and paid enough you should be able to handle this treatment, but in reality you’re incredibly exposed.’ ‘What makes me proud is that generally after the first meeting a client will say that a weight has been lifted off their shoulders and that they have regained control over the situation they face,’ he says, pointing to two recent cases, one of which involved a dispute between a team of high-level investors and the second with the departure of a CEO of large charity. Golden’s role in both situations was to ensure a continuing working relationship between the parties once the situation was resolved. ‘That’s my particular skill — careful, strategic, sensitive advice,’ he says.
