Jonathan Hewlett, Savills’ head of London residential, has seen in 2017 ‘a second year of the most volatile trading markets’ in his 30 years’ experience — but that didn’t stop him selling the second most expensive home that year, a Victorian Belgravia property priced at nearly £95 million. Having completed two other £30 million-plus sales, he believes in London’s appeal to buyers: ‘I don’t think it has lost its place in people’s hearts across the globe,’ he says. A specialist at the ultra-luxe end of the market since the Eighties, Hewlett calls it ‘an exclusive club’, comparing it to the top end of the art market. He says that ‘not everyone’s comfortable dealing with very high-net-worth individuals. They get a bit scared of them.’
