A partner in Taylor Wessing’s Disputes and Investigations team, Laurence Lieberman took on his first art law case five years ago when a HNW family was referred to him with a complaint about a painting they’d purchased. Lieberman acts predominantly for the collector in disputes over the attribution of the work, often acting in matters where the question is whether the art object — its provenance, history, condition — has been accurately described to the buyer. He says there are two simple ways of avoiding these disputes: ‘Rather than rely on what the gallery or auction house says, get a third-party independent expert to give an assessment prior to purchase — that way you won’t have to deal with the aftermath.’
