The Trump effect might have sent waves through markets worldwide, but for Laurie Black he has been a specific boon: a rare 26-year-old bottle of GlenDronach single malt signed by Trump himself created significant interest. After ‘intense bidding’, a Canadian buyer was successful, for a cool £6,000. And this was no one-off: those in the know now frequent auctionhouses where they often get a better deal than at retailers. ‘If you’re canny, you can pick up a good bargain,’ says Black. His journey began in a tourist shop in Edinburgh’s Princes Street, when a whisky department ‘hidden behind the shortbread’ piqued his interest. McTear’s offers auctions every six weeks, and attracts bids from international retailers, investors and collectors.
