‘It’s important to take the long view — the world is now transparent, and there is cooperation between jurisdictions in matters of tax and crime in a way there wasn’t before,’ says Mark Bridges, chair of Farrer’s private client offering. When he speaks, it’s wise to listen: his client base includes many members of the Royal Family, including the Queen herself — not to mention his long period (1998-2012) as solicitor for the Duchy of Lancaster. He also tells Spear’s of the need for the government and even some HNWs to pull up their socks: ‘If you are a Frenchman living in London, what good reason would you have to be worried about transparency?’ But for Bridges the client comes first. ‘I’m very lucky with my clients,’ he says, ‘as I’ve acted for them for a long time’.
