Rising star Matthias Lehleiter has worked in Berenberg’s Wealth and Asset Management team since the inception of its UK business seven years ago. Before joining Berenberg, he worked as an associate banker in the UHNW team at Barclays Wealth in London, having started his career as an investment banking trainee at DZ BANK in Frankfurt, Germany’s largest mutual bank. ‘Besides London, I have lived in Dubai, Frankfurt and Toronto,’ says Lehleiter. ‘While all these places have established financial activities, I believe London has a strong base. Aspects such as the location and time zone, the language, and the lifestyle are important aspects to wealthy individuals. The political stability is another aspect, which still holds in my mind despite Brexit uncertainty.’ Most of Berenberg’s clients are self-made and range from senior corporate executives and sports professionals to institutions, he says. ‘For us, wealth preservation after inflation is the top priority when managing clients’ money and they perceive us as their “safe pot”.’ Berenberg offers specific thematic baskets on Mittelstand (German SME companies), Healthcare and Consumer. ‘Our advisory approach builds on the expertise of our equity research analysts in London and helps clients to assemble investment portfolios collaboratively,’ says Lehleiter.
