Nigel Rowley chose his career early. ‘I was 13 when my father was chairman of an international company with a legal department. The head of legal was a very good friend of his and I very much liked the lifestyle he led, so I took a very early decision to go into the law.’ A Mackrell man since 1988 who was made partner in 1991, the astute litigator advises international corporates and individuals on complex litigation matters and a spectrum of dispute resolution and arbitration matters, mostly with an international element. A crossborder operator with significant experience in international litigation through the firm’s founding membership of Mackrell International, the association of 94 law firms worldwide, he studied at Caterham School, City of London University before training. He has seen a prominent cultural shift over the years: ‘It’s gone from losing a case and accepting it, to looking for someone to sue.’ While the claimant may expect to succeed in every case, lost cases lead to increased costs of professional indemnity insurance, making it counterproductive. ‘It’s made everybody so risk-averse.’ His most memorable case was DPR Futures Limited, a ‘massive’ white-collar case brought by the SFO, ‘the first of its kind’. Besides receiving a partnership on the back of it, he recalls revelling on the street outside the Old Bailey after the jury announced ‘not guilty’. ‘Some of the good people think they’re great — but they aren’t,’ he says. ‘What separates them is the degree of experience.’
