This year, many of Richard Cartwright’s HNW clients felt they could take the plunge to borrow money. ‘Money is cheap and we know where we are at present,’ he says. ‘The uncertainty is making people make decisions and create business opportunities now, rather than two years down the line.’ The prolonged uncertainty means some clients remain jittery. ‘They have wanted to get in the best possible position to future proof themselves against, for example, concerns inheritance tax may be diluted.’ The economy of the west and south-west depends on agriculture, tourism and hospitality, and Cartwright says his team have been ‘making sure that we are engaged with other professionals in those areas, so that we have an ear to the ground’.
