Rupert Mead has seen an increase in succession planning on behalf of his core estate owner client base in the past year, noting this work ‘is no longer necessarily driven by primogeniture, which adds an interesting dimension to the process’. Instead Mead, who made partner in 2011 and whom clients describe as likeable and modest, says his clients are ‘looking at diversifying away from farming and residential lets towards other forms of investment opportunity such as commercial real estate and renewables’. He says there is ‘concern about the impact of Brexit on farming and the possibility that subsidies will be altered or cut’, so his experience in capital tax planning and succession issues has never been more valuable.
