Sonal Thakrar, Mishcon’s new head of residential property group replacing Beverley Lewis, ‘was ten when I decided I wanted to be a lawyer’ — an ambition inspired by an American legal TV programme. But following her dream was no easy task, she says — as a young student she received ‘rejection after rejection’ in her pursuit for a training contract. Her world turned when she arrived at the doorstep of Pearson Lowe, as a Berger Oliver ‘postgirl’ delivering witness statements to a litigation partner there. ‘Call it fate, call it the universe determining my path — she just took an immediate liking to me,’ she laughs. She eventually qualified as a solicitor with the firm.In 2010, after eight years at Charles Russell and two promotions, the talented and determined Thakrar was poached by Mishcon. ‘It was time for me to fly,’ she says. ‘It was a fabulous opportunity for someone who came from virtually nothing’. She enthuses about her hardworking team of eight that ‘we are really out there, punching above our weight — I feel like we do get above the market share.’ Her team has been involved in the ‘simultaneous’ purchase of 227 properties using ‘AI tools’, the refinancing of high value properties in the course of redevelopment for an offshore bank, and a ‘time sensitive and complex’ high value purchase of a listed property. ‘Clients do not often come to us with vanilla deals,’ says Thakrar. ‘The deals tend to have a bit of quirk.’
