Kingsley Napley crime head, Stephen Parkinson, has a simple philosophy: ‘To limit the damage caused by the investigation, both in terms of its outcome and in terms of its consequences for clients’ reputations.’ He recently acted for Tesco in the SFO investigation into its historical accounting practices, concluding an agreement which avoided a prosecution. He has also acted for prime ministers including Margaret Thatcher and John Major — as well as Tony Blair during the Hutton Inquiry. Parkinson notes an increase in instructions from firms caught up in criminal investigations: ‘General counsel of companies are recognising that their usual sources of legal advice do not have the requisite in-depth expertise in criminal defence work.’
