‘I think if I found myself divorcing, Tom is the London solicitor I would choose. [He is] absolutely first class,’ says a leading QC of Tom Amlot, family lawyer and partner at AFP. Amlot joined AFP in June 2011, having previously been head of family law at Harbottles. An accredited mediator and collaborative lawyer, the former commercial litigator enjoys tackling matters across different disciplines and areas of law (such as the law around privacy injunctions, ‘which I find fascinating, although, for my sins, I am now 100 per cent family law’). Is there anything he believes isn’t well understood about family lawyers? ‘I really think clients should take their time choosing a professional, whether for a family law issue or indeed whatever it may be,’ he says. ‘Word of mouth is generally a far better guide than who looks most beautiful or glossy!’ How does he spend his free time? ‘No such thing,’ he says. ‘Weekends are spent being a taxi service or standing on the touch line — I’m told you miss it when it’s passed!’ Clients are effusive: ‘I found myself in something of a battle last year in the High Court. I had Tom on my side and I owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for his tough but fair approach, his level-headedness, and his support,’ says one. A fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, Amlot is also co-author of the Law Society’s Family Disputes Handbook (2010).
