A respected lawyer with 15 years’ experience acting for professional HNWs, partner and head of employment law Tim Spillane is described by industry authorities as ‘tenacious and tough… [he is] thoroughly understanding, not just the legal issues but also the commercial practicalities of employment disputes’. The savvy solicitor specialises in the hiring and firing of senior executives, representing individuals in contentious employment and partnership cases in the financial and professional services sectors, including high-value bonus and breach of contract claims, partnership disputes/exits and whistleblowing, discrimination and FCA regulatory matters. Spillane says the last 12 months have been the busiest in years, with highlights including representing a ‘wellknown’ chief executive whose employment had been terminated: ‘a complex, high-value matter’ involving an unfair dismissal claim and numerous contract arguments over his bonus entitlement, share valuation and non-compete clauses: ‘We helped him navigate his way to a successful outcome.’ Is there anything that people often don’t understand about his work? ‘That the majority of my cases never reach court,’ he says. ‘A lot of my time is spent putting out fires and wrapping things up confidentially, because often —but not always — that is what best suits my clients’ interests.’ Spillane graduated with an MA (Hons) from Oxford, and spent nine years at Simmons & Simmons before joining Stewarts as a partner in 2010.
