Founded by Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald in 2001, 6a has an increasingly distinguished
portfolio. For instance, Cowan Court — the new halls of residence at Churchill College,
Cambridge — was the first new court commissioned by the college since its establishment, and is
adorned with the wooden floorboards of a French goods train. It’s a complex and inspiring work, both
brutalist and delicate. 6a has also worked on art galleries, such as the South London Gallery — for
which it won multiple awards for renovating — and the MK Gallery. The firm was recently shortlisted
to convert a wing of the Park Hill Estate in Sheffield into an international arts venue, and for
the Stirling Prize, for its Photography Studio for Juergen Teller.
