For someone described as ‘the star silk at the family bar and now universally recognised as head and shoulders above anyone else’, Marks is disconcertingly modest: ‘I’m not much of a lawyer if truth be told. The law is not what turns me on, it’s the problem-solving that turns me on.’ That usually means financial problems in big-money cases, most recently acting for the husband in Hohn vs Cooper- Hohn and fighting off an initial claim of £800 million to reach a £337 million settlement. However, ‘It’s never just about the pounds and pennies. I like to understand what their business is, how they make their money and why it fluctuates in the way it does,’ says Marks, a keen Country and Western fan. much as I possibly can… as far away as I can possibly go’.
