Rae is quite an exception: her rivals love her. One previously told us that she is a ‘grande dame of divorce without the ego and the drama enjoyed by her contemporaries’, while another adds that she is ‘technically superb’. The modest solicitor’s most memorable case was one of the most high-profile divorces in history — that of Princess Diana, for whom she acted. A pioneer of UK collaborative law, the qualified mediator and family arbitrator feels most rewarded when clients are able to ‘move on’ after a ‘fair and civilised’ decision. Indeed, most of her cases are settled before reaching court. She’s unimpressed with the current state of the law. ‘[It’s] almost impossible for people to work out what would happen if they went to court,’ she says.
