Humphries, an energetic and engaging young partner at Stewarts Law, has expertise in the resolution of complex financial issues for HNWs — married and unmarried — and frequently acts in cases involving privately owned companies, venture capital firms and hedge funds. Such big-money exposure means he has achieved awards in excess of £60 million.
His clients may be weighted towards the City, but Humphries keeps a broad horizon, saying he enjoys learning about the variety of clients’ vocations, experiences and setups. ‘You’re dealing with people who are completely absorbed in their individual circumstances, at one of the most defining moments of their lives.’
A rugby union and history buff, Humphries says one of the greatest challenges is to ‘protect clients from themselves’. But they’re certainly grateful for it: one client called him a key part of her ‘dream team’ at a ‘horrendous time’ in her life: ‘I cannot rate them highly enough — and I should know, having had to change legal team halfway through due to loss of confidence.’
Placing their confidence in Humphries was a savvy move. Chambers called him ‘sharp and ambitious, and his judgment is always spot on,’ as well as praising his ‘sensible and calm approach to family law matters’. That approach is something he applies across the family spectrum, including the negotiation of pre- and postnuptial agreements and the increasingly prevalent world of co-habitation whereby property rights can be established for non-married couples. Fittingly, he also sits on the resolution group set up to deal with this field.
