Collins reflects on how lawyers should not be dulled by exposure to their clients’ misery — in similar fashion to dentists and undertakers. ‘I think you have to remind yourself, very frequently, that people are going through a traumatic episode — it’s serious stuff,’ he says. ‘Often it’s the most important financial transaction of their lives, so they need to know you’re getting it right.’ Approachable and calm, Collins advises on all aspects of family law, including divorce, separation agreements, financial matters and pre- and post-nups. He also advises unmarried couples and civil partners and is experienced in complex multi-jurisdictional disputes, relocation cases and claims against offshore trusts — circumstances where speaking French and German helps. Collins is a keen painter who also enjoys skiing, ‘doing up houses’ and ‘all things Italian’.
