After leaving the army in 1998, Stratford was looking forward to the more ‘gentlemanly pace’ of City stockbroking. It never materialised as he found himself at the cutting edge of wealth management when Collins Stewart launched its centralised investment process. The company has since become Canaccord, but has stayed innovative, launching a new inhouse system to guarantee suitability, complemented by a team of analysts. The result is £11.5 billion AuM and industrybeating returns. But such growth is also down to the level of service the Watford FC fan provides. ‘I started with one client who worked for a particular company,’ he explains. ‘And the company started growing; we then took on the board directors, their families became our clients and we now look after the pension fund too.’
