‘Communication is the single most important thing. It’s also the area where our industry goes wrong the most often,’ says Sydenham. Speaking regularly to the broadsheets, the pink pages and the Today programme, she has proven her media credentials. But what about openness with clients? ‘Organisations often sell clients what they want to deliver, as opposed to what the client wants, and where their concerns lie. Accurate, detailed information and listening are the most important things in our industry.’ That means tailoring client outcomes by twinning products with bespoke flexibility and encouraging client input. ‘Sometimes clients want a stockpicking portfolio,’ she says. ‘Sometimes they want the complete asset allocation and stock selection.’
