Like some of his fellows in this Index, Lane learnt about Landed Estates by working with the land itself.
He read land economy at Cambridge and qualified as a solicitor in 1993, after nine years as a farmer. ‘Andrew’s down-to- earth approach is becoming ever rarer,’ says a client.
‘His experience in the real world of business through ten years farming give him the practical edge, balanced with a first-rate mind,’ they add.
Lane — who has particular expertise in capital taxation and succession for the owners of large country landholdings — also acts for investors and has a great deal of experience in formulating tax efficient structures for both onshore and offshore owners.
Perhaps it’s a sign of the times that he increasingly counts his clients from overseas — particularly from Europe and the US. One Swiss UHNW (‘probably the wealthiest client’ he has ever acted for) even approached him to find an estate purely to ‘enjoy his shooting, close to his daughter in London and to an airport, where he could land his airplane’.
