Synonymous with the rise of London’s super-rich, having a One Hyde Park address may not be everyone’s taste. But Baring, the affable Australian and star agent working on the scheme, is humbler than the stock he sells. ‘I was on my way to lunch,’ he says, ‘and I got a call from a lady who said: “I want to buy the biggest and most expensive apartment in London.”’ He had doubts the call was real — until the buyer sent their nineteenyear- old son from Ukraine to negotiate the price. ‘He must have had at least ten bodyguards with him,’ says Baring. With three floors available — which was all the Candy brothers would allow — the deal was sealed at £137 million — £5,000/sq ft.
