A self-confessed non-‘techie’, Sykes is more of a trusted family adviser than fiscal acrobat, an identity his client base of entrepreneurs, international families, and landed estates appreciates. Saffery Champness’s ‘old money’ heritage is at the heart of its mission, which means he’s interested in intergenerational family planning and trusts, and also in avoiding ‘schemes’ or profit-making money movements. ‘Traditional clients are more interested in maintaining [and] preserving wealth,’ he says. That appeals to clients who are buying, rather than inheriting, their family estate: ‘New money wants to become old money eventually.’ The ‘trusted adviser’ tag seems apt as he’s taken on executor and trustee roles for clients. ‘It’s what we strive for,’ he says.
