Having started out as a rural surveyor, Burton decided that financial landscapes were his true calling. He now heads the heritage specialist’s private wealth and estates group, working closely with the farms and stately homes that make up more than three-quarters of his client base. He’s sensitive to their need for protection above profit, so he looks to evolve with policy rather than react to it. ‘I often say to clients we must be aware of the direction of travel, must make sure the house is in best order, but I never think it’s a good idea to make big structural changes on the back of trying to second guess what’s going to come round the corner,’ he says. ‘That can be costly and can put you potentially in a worse position.’
