Chaboud is nothing if not ambitious. The former Citigroup corporate financier and Société Générale hedge fund manager has teamed up with former colleagues Alexis Gurdjian and Pierre Lussato to merge his Parisian SPGP firm with their London based Galaxis Capital to create a Europe-wide wealth manager.
Skylar aims to provide its wealth management clients with the chance to access corporate finance, private equity and real estate. With 50-plus finance professionals and 200 client families on board, they already have AuM of $1 billion, complemented by offices in London, Paris, Luxembourg, Belgium, Monaco and Geneva. The USP is integration: ‘We have the full support of our team but also the full transparency and the capacity to know, on a real-time basis, the whole engagement of our clients on a worldwide basis. If you take a family office, they know clients well, but then they externalise their whole execution. Our main differentiation factor is to be 100 per cent integrated and 100 per cent independent.’ He says the profession needs ‘guys like me’, with the knowledge and experience of all the sectors they operate in.
He mentions a big client who was tied to the automotive industry during a time of eurozone uncertainty: ‘I decided to protect my client in the derivatives market with a hedging strategy. You have to have the global picture because those kind of big shoulders in non-listed companies have a huge exposure in their business.’ And he’s smart enough to let clients inform that global picture, encouraging club investors and making sure he’s ‘sitting at the table to hear what they say as well’.
