Bettany sees ‘agnostic’ strategies — which adjust automatically to market conditions — becoming more prevalent and working ‘quite well’ these days. She highlights Lombard Odier’s own daily-adjusted and risk-based range, called Vantage. ‘They produce a steady return. You don’t get the peaks, but you don’t get the troughs either,’ she says. ‘It takes a lot of the worry away — it’s very difficult to make accurate predictions.’ The warm and lively senior private banker enjoys working with clients who have a ‘more aggressive’ appetite, though most take their risks in their private businesses. ‘I handle the more boring, rainy day money — they’re generally not looking for excitement from their Lombard Odier investments,’ she laughs.
