With a history stretching back to 1761, Sotheran’s is no stranger to market fluctuation. Chris Saunders, who manages the natural history and science departments, says Brexit has brought uncertainty to the market, but has also produced an influx of interest from foreign buyers and those looking for stable, long-term investment: ‘Perhaps there is something reassuring about holding a beautiful object in your hand in times of instability,’ he reflects. The bookseller by appointment to the Prince of Wales has had an eventful 250 years, from acquiring Charles Dickens’ library to commissioning a binding of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in 1910. Sotheran’s has just refurbished, adding a new Club Room and Gallery for private shows and pop-up exhibitions.
