‘I love our industry,’ says Ian Barnard, one of three founding partners at independently owned boutique private investment office CapGen. ‘I enjoy being in the privileged position of helping to run a business. And I find meeting, talking to and trying to understand the needs of clients to be fascinating.’ Since its inception ten years ago, CapGen has been serving ‘sophisticated and substantial private clients whose goal is to own a diversified, multi-asset, externally managed portfolio,’ explains Barnard, a former soldier and diplomat with a history degree from Oxford University. He chairs the firm’s Investment Committee and is a member of the Client Portfolio Committee, Asset Allocation Committee and Risk Committee, as well as leading the firm’s direct investment advisory business. Currently serving a dozen client groups with a team of 35, they offer an extensive investment service, which includes asset allocation, manager selection, portfolio management, risk and performance analysis, and direct real estate and private equity investing. The major challenge continues to be preserving wealth and achieving good investment returns for clients, says Barnard. ‘Right now, valuations in pretty much all asset classes are relatively extended and so balancing the imperative of preserving wealth with the desire to generate return is very finely balanced.’
