A veritable rising star of the financial advisory world, associate at London Wall Partners Ruth McGaffin enjoys her ‘broad’ advisory role — one that involves providing ‘complex and highly personalised advice on both financial planning and investment management, in the context of clients’ overall circumstances and objectives’, she says. ‘It’s been exciting to be part of a growing business, and my role continues to challenge me daily. We have taken on 21 new clients in the last 12 months and are focusing on growing this further.’ McGaffin offers a present read on markets, looking to the year ahead: ‘We believe it is important not to have too much invested in the UK and are continuing to recommend our clients hold globally diversified portfolios, which should hopefully withstand much of the short or medium term volatility in the UK markets as the Brexit process pans out.’
McGaffin works mainly with City professionals, often partners in major law or accountancy firms, and entrepreneurs. ‘They tend to be astute and challenging individuals, but have little time to dedicate to managing their own money,’ she says, noting that these sophisticated clients are actually ‘increasingly looking for simple and straightforward investments, rather than complicated structured products or tax-geared investments’. She’s equally clear when asked to suggest an aspect of her industry that needs urgent change: ‘I believe the exit penalties some firms charge their clients to move advisers are unacceptable — they should be forbidden.’ McGaffin joined London Wall in February 2015 following a six year stint with Big Four accountancy firm EY, where she advised a wide range of individuals — including a large number of non-domiciled US citizen clients — on their personal and cross-border tax matters. She’s actually tasted the full spectrum of City professions, having graduated from Cambridge University with a bachelor’s degree in law. A keen traveller, McGaffin recently returned from an ‘amazing’ safari in Tanzania, and is currently planning her next adventure.
