One of the most respected family solicitors in London, Debbie Chism acted for HRH Prince Louis of Luxembourg in his recent court battle against The Daily Telegraph – ‘one of the leading cases of the moment on the ever-present conflict between privacy in financial remedy proceedings and freedom of press expression,’ she says. The case focused on privacy in family proceedings, and resulted in a successful application for reporting restrictions. ‘Maintaining privacy for families in court proceedings is challenging but there are other means of finding solutions – collaborative law, arbitration and private FDRs. These are all means I have used and would advocate,’ she says. It’s more than just a job: ‘Family law is what really matters to you – there’s less black letter law but it’s of huge importance,’ she has previously told Spear’s. ‘It’s also a different skill set for the lawyers which is why you get the personalities. We have to really listen to what’s important to people.’ The first meeting is key: ‘It’s how you get a view on what their relationship with their spousal partner is like and gives you a read on how the case will develop.’ Chism was encouraged into family law by that stalwart of the discipline, Blanche Lucas. ‘She was an inspiring woman and a feminist – she would have approved of the shift in family law towards equality that has happened over the last 20 years,’ she says. What’s her mantra? ‘Relentless positivity.’
