I have been fortunate enough to have worked in major gift fundraising since 1991, when I ran the National Trust’s Sutton House Appeal in Hackney,’ Martin Kaufman tells the Institute of Fundraising. Since founding his practice, he has worked with the Architectural Association, the Museum of London and Brakeley. He aims to connect investors to charitable projects. ‘[You need] to listen but also to be eloquent and passionate about your cause – to be knowledgeable… without pretending to be an expert – to be empathetic to every single donor’s circumstances and motivations.’ Kaufman is further inspired to professionalise the philanthropy sector, and create a higher level of engagement for those involved.
