Philip Rutter is a third generation family solicitor, following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps training and qualifying at S Rutter & Co. With experience in the family law departments of several leading London firms, he moved to Bishop & Sewell in 2016. He specialises in dealing with financial claims on divorce as well as private children law matters. Rutter’s expertise is in pre and post-nuptial and cohabitation agreements; financial claims on divorce and on separation for unmarried couples; and children issues including who a child should live with and specific issue applications such as education. Many of Rutter’s cases have international elements, although the majority of his clients are based in London and the Home Counties. He believes that the term ‘trusted adviser’ has fallen out of fashion, but remains an important aspect of the profession. Rutter prefers a pragmatic, solution-based approach and says his mantra is ‘every problem has a solution’: he is usually able to find a resolution that suits both parties. ‘I am increasingly being approached by couples who are largely in agreement, whether it is on the terms of a prenuptial agreement or settlement of their financial claims on divorce,’ says Rutter. Although he is only able to work for one of them, by offering sensible solutions on unresolved issues and developing trust, he says that he has the knack for finding a proposal that suits both sides.
