Renato Labi is a true litigator, described by peers as ‘tenacious’. Formerly of DLA and Bates, Wells & Braithwaite, Labi has wide experience in dealing with financial disputes within divorce proceedings and following cohabitation, and in complex private law children’s cases. It might be said that in pursuing a litigation-centric vein in family law he is working contrary to the prevailing trend, but he’s an experienced hand in big-ticket financial and children’s relocation cases, and is known for his forensic and assured approach. His skillset has seen him act in some of family law’s biggest cases, not least 2010’s ground-breaking Imerman v Tchenguiz, a bitter four-year battle that established the principle that spouses are not allowed to help themselves to private documents to help their case. He is currently acting in a number of reported cases, and was involved alongside Frances Hughes in the monster case Estrada v Juffali. Labi, a cultured lawyer with a love of the arts, is at the crest of a wave of trusts-related litigation. Prenups is another growth area – in one instance negotiations between an engaged couple went ‘very badly’, but the result was more of a blessing in disguise: ‘The marriage didn’t take place, and everyone got away pretty lightly.’ However, ‘if the couple are honest with each other there’s no reason those agreements can’t be negotiated civilly, put in a drawer and forgotten about.’
