After 11 years at some of the world’s top law firms, Annabelle Gauberti founded Crefovi in 2012, the one-stop-shop law firm which focuses on advising the creative industries.
The firm specialises in everything from fashion, luxury to entertainment and, of course, art clients, representing artists, artists’ estates, foundations, galleries, collectors and museums.
The art world being secretive and mostly unregulated, Annabelle and her team are busy with cases where art market professionals have taken advantage of HNWs or other types of art collectors, such as museums or foundations.
‘A hobby or charitable activity can turn into a nightmare,’ explains the forthright Gauberti, who is trained in, and practices under, both English and French law.
Her advice: ‘Get a good lawyer to review the purchase or auction agreement as well as the terms and conditions of sale and transport; check the work’s provenance; go and see the art piece before you buy it. Hold it in your hands and look at it very closely. ’
