It’s been a ‘busy and exciting year’ for Caroline Watson, who in the past 12 months became the national head of family law at Shoosmiths. The firm is continuing on an upward trajectory, she is pleased to report, having bolstered the team at associate and partnership level.

‘We have ambitious plans to continue our growth and become the leading national law firm famous for our client experience,’ Watson tells Spear’s. ‘Taking time out to listen to our client’s needs has helped us focus and drive forward with our “looking after you” service.’

‘Each client is uniquely important,’ she explains. ‘We get to know you and agree a course of action that best meet your needs. ‘Our advice is clear, practical and strategic, whilst also understanding the sensitive and emotional issues that can arise.’

Watson is a specialist in all the key areas of family law, covering divorce, separation, cohabitation, pre and post nuptial agreements and children matters as part of her practice. As leader of the World Services Group for family law in Europe, Watson also has the edge when it comes to international matters. This breadth makes Watson remarkably adaptable in her approach to clients.

The firm can leverage its relationships with its business divisions to help cover the various client needs that can arise, pooling together its arms of expertise to ensure that the right solution is found. It was this ‘client focused’ attitude towards finding solutions that attracted Watson to the firm when she first joined in 2017 from Slater and Gordon. The practice has recently been much busier with cohabitation – the fastest growing family type in the UK – as well as an increase in international work.

‘Working collaboratively with colleagues in our divisions, we were able to come up with a tax efficient way of implementing a divorce order,’ she recalls of a recent case. ‘Working solo, this solution would never have come to light as it was not the traditional way of implementing a divorce order. Good collaboration not only enhances your expertise, but also provides an enormous sense of pride knowing you have delivered a client service that is hard to match.‘

Her clients have included HNW business owners, directors, senior managers, sport/media personalities and ex pats. It’s a practice that’s won Watson and her team more than a few plaudits in the five years since the division was formed. ‘Without a doubt she impressed me,’ says one satisfied client. ‘She has meticulous case preparation, and gives realistic and robust advice at appropriate times.’
