The story behind a work of art is in many respects as important as the work of art itself,’ says the seasoned dealer Daniel Crouch.

A specialist in rare maps, atlases, voyages, globes and scientific instruments, he highlights a favourite – the Viscount Maggiolo 1531 Planisphere, a goatskin map of the voyages of Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, which he is currently offering for a record US $10 million. Market interest in cartography has grown in recent years as travel becomes an ever more important part of people’s lives, and as buyers become increasingly appreciative of their long-term value. ‘Maps are compatible with contemporary homes, and so don’t suffer from looking dated,’ says Crouch.
