‘We’ve had a cracking year,’ Joseph Mazzucca reports to Spear’s. The Shoosmiths partner works in Shoosmiths’ esteemed property team, which for the first time was listed in The Lawyer’s global 50 (ranking second) and currently holds the title of real estate Legal Team of the Year, as voted by the leading industry publication Estates Gazette.
‘The numbers speak for themselves – we completed more than 100 property transactions with values exceeding £1 million in the last year (and a further 9,500 private client completions), making us one of the best resourced and strongest law firms operating in the high net worth residential sector,’ he adds. Mazzucca heads up the firm’s London office as well as its real estate team, where, over the last four years, he has observed the office go from ‘strength to strength’. The London office has grown at an ‘incredible rate’, with the national real estate team expanding by 15 per cent over the last 12 months alone. ‘Incredibly satisfying given the blood, sweat and tears,’ he notes.
Shoosmiths, as Mazzucca describes it, is a firm that blends the old with the new. Its UK roots can be traced back to 1845, but it is resolutely 21st century in its outlook, with an open attitude towards innovation and an ‘unstuffy’ approach towards clients, relying less on its size or tradition than a ‘crystal clear’ focus paid towards each client. The result is an award-winning team that recruits some of the best in the business. ‘“You get the people bit right” is a typical comment we hear back from clients – something that is better experienced than described, although the difference is often tangible. We go out of our way to help, and our lawyers really listen. In a rapidly-changing world, Shoosmiths truly acts as a strong ally on your behalf,’ beams Mazzucca, who himself brings over 20 years of experience to the fore, having worked in the capital all his career.
It’s a level of experience that has provided Mazzucca with rounded credentials. He boasts significant experience in real estate law – including investment, development, corporate and finance matters, as well as landlord and tenant issues. Clients have included developers, property companies, institutions, private equity houses and end users. HNW clients tend to be ‘incredibly varied,’ he says. ‘From the fifteenth-generation heir of a landed family to owners of fast-growth tech companies; from the third-generation owner of a family business to overseas investors,’ Mazzucca’s clients tend to be united by a shared expectation of what they want from their lawyers: discretion, trust, loyalty, and absolute experience.
