‘I am a naturally curious person, which is why family law suited me. I also love problem solving,’ Kim Beatson tells Spear’s. As head of Anthony Gold’s family department for more than 20 years, she focuses on matrimonial finance and children matters. She is also a member of the firm’s dispute resolution team, lending well-established mediation expertise. One client describes her as having ‘a no-nonsense approach; she is one of the most efficient people I have ever come across’.
Beatson regularly lectures on child relocation, writes for a range of publications (including New Law Journal, Times Online, Family Law), and is one of the most experienced leave to remove practitioners in the country. She is also a founder member of FORUM – Rethinking Relocation, a group of family justice professionals, helping parents to find a solution to conflict that avoids court proceedings.
The group comprises specialist solicitors, barristers, mediators, arbitrators, family therapists and independent social workers, all of whom adhere to a code of practice while engaging in creative option development. Her most significant cases undertaken over the past year have involved applications to relocate to China and Canada.
Beatson is keen to emphasise the importance of ‘carefully drafting jurisdiction clauses in any nuptial agreements’. As for future trends, the highly regarded partner also anticipates family law becoming even more international in future and ‘much more complex’ as Brexit transitional regulations play out.
