Opened by the late Charles Ede in 1971, this eponymous London gallery has produced more than 300 catalogues, selling to several of the world’s leading collectors and museums. Managing director Martin Clist has worked in the art world for over three decades, overseeing the Whitechapel Gallery (under Nicholas Serota) and Waddington Custot Galleries, before moving into antiquities.
Ede moved to larger premises in 2014 and now deals in ancient art from Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Near East. ‘Ancient art is where it all started,’ Clist explains. ‘For the past 7,000 years or so it’s been a variation on a theme. Art shows us ourselves. If we are prepared to look, we can see not only from where we have come, but who we are.’
