Charles Russell Speechlys’ Sarah Anticoni specialises in advising on or mediating complex financial claims upon divorce, along with future arrangements for children.

No case is ever straightforward, and not everything can be settled or mediated, she explains. However, a particular success this year was resolving a ‘leave to remove’ case with a reconciliation of the family.

When it comes to clients, ‘I am empathetic but not their friend; I’m always prepared to listen, but will remain independent, and I am not afraid to say things as I see them,’ says Anticoni. ‘Ever the pragmatist, I really try to help people who are stuck somewhere they never thought they would be, and look to their future. Organised, efficient, I just roll my sleeves up and get on and sort things out.’

Clients comprise all ages. However, she notes a rise in the number of elderly clients on their second and third divorce. Nuptial agreements are increasingly popular, and she predicts more work in areas like surrogacy, same sex relationships and unmarried couples.

Anticoni says a good family lawyer is one whose ‘knowledge of the law is a given, and translates that into outcomes that work for the person and their family, and cares about that outcome almost as much as they do.’ Her passion for family law started as a summer job at a local solicitors. ‘I loved the sink or swim aspect and immediate client contact,’ she says. ‘Now I act on the divorces of children I acted for 30 years ago, so I must have done something right!’
